Erdogan sees ‘window of opportunity’ for US to lift Iran sanctions
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Sunday that he believes there is a possibility the United States will consider lifting sanctions against Tehran based on recent statements from the Biden administration.
“President Erdogan, who stated that he wished the new U.S. administration would abandon unilateral sanctions on Iran and lift restrictions on the prosperity of Iranian people, said the statements on the issue in recent days had led to a new window of opportunity,” the Turkish presidency said in a statement.
Earlier in the week, the US announced it is willing to meet with Iran and other signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to discuss a “diplomatic way forward” regarding the Iran nuclear deal. Meanwhile, Tehran insisted it would go back to full JCPOA compliance if the sanctions were lifted and Washington returned to the deal.
