EU confirms new 1.8B dose deal with Pfizer, BioNTech
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday the European Union has signed a new contract with Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE that guarantees the bloc up to 1.8 billion doses of the firms’ vaccine against COVID-19 in the period 2021–23.
“With our signature, the new contract is now in force, which is good news for our long-term fight to protect European citizens against the virus and its variants!” von der Leyen stated. “Potential contracts with other manufacturers will follow the same model, to the benefit of all.”
The confirmation comes shortly after the European Commission approved the deal, which initially guaranteed 900 million doses of the jab. Meanwhile, the bloc started another legal action against AstraZeneca PLC to have the company deliver the promised 90 million additional shots of its vaccine by the end of June.
