EU considers legal action against German ruling
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Sunday that the EU is considering launching legal action against Germany overits Constitutional Court’s ruling on European Central Bank (ECB) bond purchases.
Von der Leyen stated it is not up to the German court, but up to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) to decide on the matter. “We are now analysing the ruling of the German Constitutional Court in detail. And we will look into possible next steps, which may include the option of infringement proceedings,” she added.
Earlier, the German Constitutional Court said parts of the ECB’s purchases of public sector debt were unconstitutional as they are not supported by EU treaty texts. However, the ECJ responded by saying it is the only court which can decide on whether “an act of an EU institution is contrary to EU law.”
