EU orders 20 million more Pfizer vaccine doses
The European Commission announced on Sunday it ordered 20 million more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech. 5 million doses are scheduled for delivery in January, 5 million in February and 10 million in March, in addition to the already scheduled 195 million doses to be supplied in the first quarter of 2022.
The EU also activated the first option to order over 200 million doses under its third contract with Pfizer and BioNTech. “This order also covers vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant, should these vaccines become available. By this order, the EU is preparing itself in case adapted vaccines are needed,” the Commission stated. Deliveries of these doses are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2022.
