EU tells China to reverse BBC ban
The European Union called on China on Saturday to end its ban on BBC World News. The EU noted that China needs to respect the freedom of expression and accused Beijing of violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as its own constitution by doing so.
“The EU remains strongly committed to safeguarding media freedom and pluralism, as well as protecting the right to freedom of expression online and offline, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information without interference of any kind,” the bloc said.
China banned BBC World News in China as a reciprocal step earlier in the week after the United Kingdom withdrew its CGTN’s license in the UK.
