EU to impose sanctions on up to 20 Belarus officials
The European Union decided on Friday to blacklist up to 20 senior officials from Belarus, the AP reported. The decision follows an announcement by the European Council President Charles Michel that the EU will impose sanctions on a number of Belarusian individuals suspected of election fraud.
“We have general agreement on how the list will be structured and who will be, more or less, on the list,” said Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek (pictured) after a meeting with the bloc’s other foreign ministers. The final list is not expected for another week at the earliest.
Petricek added that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko should be on the list. “The question is whether in the first stage, or a later stage if there is no progress.”
