Europe higher at close on vaccine optimism
Major stock markets in Europe closed higher on Friday after a study of Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE’s vaccine against COVID-19 determined the jab was effective against the new strain of the virus. Later on, the European Union confirmed it had secured 300 million doses of the aforementioned treatment, while the United Kingdom approved Moderna Inc’s medication.
The DAX closed 0.38% higher as Infineon Tech AG jumped by 6.74%. The FTSE 100 went up by 0.16%, with Hargreaves Lansdown PLC increasing by 5.41%. The CAC 40 rose by 0.38% as Veolia Environnement SA grew by 4.91%.
The euro lost 0.14% to the dollar, selling for $1.22486 at 5:27 pm CET. A minute later, the pound sterling stood flat against the greenback, changing hands for $1.35693.
