Europe opens slightly higher, virus in limelight

Stocks on the major European equity market indices traded slightly higher at the open on Wednesday as the investors focused on the latest surge of coronavirus cases on the continent.

While France’s Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire dismissed the need for new coronavirus measures in the country, World Health Organization’s Europe chief hinted that the talks of mandatory vaccinations could come in the near future.

The DAX advanced by 0.07% at 9:02 am CET, with QIAGEN moving up by 1.04% a minute later. The CAC 40 gained 0.19% at the open as Vivendi jumped 1.61%. Meanwhile, in London, the FTSE 100 rose by 0.12% with Intertek surging 1.98% a minute later.

The euro was flat versus the dollar at 9:02 am CET, selling for 1.12461, while the pound slid 0.07% compared to the greenback at the same time, to change hands at 1.33710.
