Europe’s gas crisis not incited by Russia – State Dep.
Amos Hochstein, State Department’s Senior Advisor for Global Energy Security, gave a speech at the Center for Strategic & International Studies on Friday, stating that Russia did not provoke the gas crisis in Europe, neither did it act soon enough to mitigate the incoming consequences.
Hochstein noted that Russia’s gas deliveries strictly matched contractual agreements, however, he insisted that during crisis conditions, Kremlin should have authorized a supply increase much sooner, citing Norweigian efforts to fill up stockpiles.
According to the State Department official, Russia should remain as the main gas supplier to Europe, but it is important to diversify the energy sector, meaning to introduce more alternative energy sources.
