Experts back British govt’s COVID vaccination plan
The British Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation recommended on Thursday that the country’s mass vaccination campaign should focus on administering the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to as many people as possible.
“Given the high level of protection afforded by the first dose, models suggest that initially vaccinating a greater number of people with a single dose will prevent more deaths and hospitalizations than vaccinating a smaller number of people with two doses… The second dose is still important to provide longer-lasting protection and is expected to be as or more effective when delivered at an interval of 12 weeks from the first dose,” the Committee’s statement noted.
On the other hand, some doctors from the United Kingdom reportedly plan to refuse following these recommendations that are backed by the government, but instead administer both required vaccine doses to vulnerable groups.
