Fauci: COVID boosters provide ‘optimal care’
United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci stated on Sunday that in order for an individual to be optimally protected from the coronavirus they need to receive a booster shot.
Fauci noted that the need for booster shots is becoming more evident as more data on the Omicron coronavirus variant started to come in. Moreover, he said that health agencies are evaluating whether the definition of “fully vaccinated” needs to change to include boosters.
Fauci’s comments come as the US nears 800,000 coronavirus-related deaths, and 25 states have detected thus far the Omicron variant. Data from the United Kingdom released earlier indicated that the AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are 70% to 75% effective against the variant.
