Fauci: S. Africa travel ban only ‘temporary measure’
United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Wednesday that the travel ban for South Africa and eight other countries where the Omicron coronavirus variant was first identified is only a “temporary measure.”
Fauci said that the measure was introduced to give the US more time to analyze the effects of the new variant and see how dangerous it is. Furthermore, he unveiled that the molecular profile of the variant suggests it may be more transmissible and might evade some vaccine protection.
However, Fauci urged the public to get vaccinated and to get the booster shot, saying that the added protection from the booster is the best possible option to ensure that there is protection against serious cases from the virus.
