Fed to review potential US digital currency – report
The Federal Reserve is preparing to launch a review of a potential United States digital currency as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Monday.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the digital dollar would be issued by the country’s central bank, just like paper greenback and coins. They added, however, that the decision is unlikely to be made soon as the institution’s members have different opinions on the matter.
The report comes after Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated the bank is evaluating the option of introducing this currency as, in his opinion, digital money is becoming more important.
