Freedom of movement in Afghanistan priority – Blinken
The United States and its allies will be focusing on ensuring safe departure of civilians from Afghanistan and re-establishing charter flights from the country, Secretary of State Antony Blinken (pictured) said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Blinken prioritized “the recognition of basic human rights, especially of women and minorities” in Afghanistan, explaining that any legitimacy and Western support of the newly appointed Taliban government will have to be “earned.”
Blinken also discussed the importance of the 20-year German-American partnership in Afghanistan, thanking Germany and its people for assisting the US in evacuating 124,000 people and providing a temporary transit location for an additional 34,000.
