French troops killed Islamic State leader in Grater Sahara – Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French armed forces have neutralized Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahraoui, leader of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara group.
“This is another major success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” Macron wrote in a tweet.
The news was later confirmed by Florence Parley, Ministry of the Armed Forces head, who revealed that al-Sahraoui was killed in a strike as part of the country’s Operation Barkhan, launched in 2014 to combat Islamist groups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.
