Gove: UK govt might extend furlough scheme
British Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove stated on Thursday the United Kingdom’s government is “open-minded” about the possibility of extending its job retention scheme.
Gove described the program of the authorities paying laid-off workers a minimum wage as a “huge success” made possible “thanks to the broad shoulders of the UK Treasury.” He added the government will continue to increase its spending in order to mitigate the effects of the crisis the COVID-19 pandemic led to.
Back in March, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak extended the scheme until the end of September.
