House advances bill urging Pence to invoke 25th Amendment
United States House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution in order to remove President Donald Trump from office.
Action against the head of state was taken after he allegedly incited his supporters to storm the Capitol building last week while Congress was in session. The lawmakers voted on the legislation along party lines and forwarded the bill to the Senate with a 222-204 vote. Despite no Republicans crossing the aisle to favor the bill, seven party members have declined to vote.
The lower congressional chamber had already prepared to initiate impeachment proceedings in case Pence refused to oust Trump a week before his term runs out, which the vice president later confirmed he will not be doing.
