Impossible to control COVID-19 transmissions – Russian expert
With factors such as virus mutations and vaccination rates taken into consideration, the timeline of COVID-19 becoming a seasonal disease is impossible to predict at this time, Deputy Director of the Russian Central Research Institute of Epidemiology Alexander Gorelov told Russian media on Friday.
“It is impossible to set any clear deadlines,” Gorelov said reflecting on comments made by chief of Russia’s sanitary watchdog Anna Popova earlier in the week that the coronavirus will become a seasonal infection “like the flu.”
Gorelov added that there were no antiviral treatments that could regulate the transmission of the disease available, warning of frequent mutations of the virus as a potential consequence of low vaccination rates. “The changes most often occur in the non-immune organisms, including all the virus’ mutations that humanity faces over and over again,” he said.
