India orders antitrust probe into Google
India’s Competition Commission of India (CCI) said on Friday it ordered an antitrust investigation into Google after receiving a complaint from the Digital News Publishers Association, from here on referred to as the Informant.
The tech giant is accused of abusing its dominant market position by, among other things, not paying news publishers for the snippets used by them in search and of paying only 51% of the advertisement spent by the advertisers.
“The gravamen of the allegations of the Informant relates to the impugned conduct of Google, resulting in denial of fair share in the digital advertising revenue to news publishers and disclosure of inadequate information to reach a fair settlement,” the CCI noted and added the allegations of the Informant make it “appear that news publishers have no choice but to accept the terms and conditions imposed by Google.”
