Johnson opposes idea of nationwide lockdown
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stressed on Friday he opposed the proposition that new spikes in infections from COVID-19 should be fought with a new nationwide lockdown and that he believed respecting measures of social distance would be effective enough.
Johnson confirmed the government had “started building the domestic infrastructure” to provide more rapid tests to ensure businesses remained open. “In time we want to use tests to keep open more parts of the economy that have sadly been closed. It will take time to get this right before many operations can buy and operate these tests themselves,” he explained.
The prime minister also addressed the rise in contractions in certain areas, such as Greater Manchester, saying he would “need to intervene” if an agreement with local leaders is not reached.
