Macron calls for stricter EU border control due to COVID-19
French President Emmanuel Macron (pictured) proposed on Friday enhanced EU and Schengen area border control to curb the coronavirus outbreak. Earlier in the week, the French president criticized Austria and Slovenia over the announcements of the closure of their borders with Italy due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
On Thursday, Macron announced that educational institutions will be closed starting Monday to restrain the COVID-19 spread, adding public transportation will remain open. In addition, gatherings are limited to no more than 100 people as of Friday. Previously, France limited gatherings to 1,000 people.
The number of people infected by coronavirus in France was at 2,876 as of Thursday, March 12, with the death toll at 61.
