Major incident declared in London amid Omicron surge
London Mayor Sadiq Khan declared on Saturday a “major incident” in Britain’s capital amid the surges in new infections from COVID-19, especially the Omicron strain.
“Hospital admissions are going up, but also staff absences are going up by massive levels,” he told reporters. “This is a statement of how serious things are, but also it means, rather than different public authorities working separately, we will be working together through both the London Resilience Forum and also through the strategic co-ordinating group.”
A major incidence is introduced when an occurrence needs extra efforts and arrangements to be made by one or more response teams to address it. A day ago, the United Kingdom reported the highest number of new cases in a day since the start of the pandemic.
