Netflix to go carbon-neutral by 2022
Netflix pledged on Tuesday to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022 as part of its Net Zero + Mature plan. The company’s sustainability officer Emma Stewart wrote in a blogpost that Netflix is aligning its efforts with the Paris Agreement’s goals.
The streaming company is aiming to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by 45% before 2030, whereas for the emissions that can’t be avoided, Netflix will compensate by investing in projects that prevent climate change, such as tropical forests conservation.
In 2020 Netflix’s carbon footprint was down 13% to 1.13 million metric tons. Half of the footprint comes from the production of shows and movies, while the other half is derived from office work and streaming operations, such as through Amazon Web Services provider.
