Over 20 killed in attack on Afghan prison
At least 21 people have been killed and 43 have been injured in an ongoing attack on a prison in Jalalabad, a city in Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan, local media reported on Monday.
There are security forces, civilians and prisoners among the victims of the attack, provincial governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told local media. The attack reportedly started on Sunday evening and is still in progress as the assailants “use shopping malls as cover,” Khogyani said, adding that three attackers have been killed so far. The incident sparked a massive jailbreak, but 700 inmates have been recaptured, a source told TOLOnews and noted that the prison has hosted 1,500 convicts before the attack occurred.
Islamic State’s Khorasan unit allegedly claimed the responsibility for the assault, after its intelligence chief Assadullah Orakzai had been killed by the Afghan special forces in the Jalalabad area on Sunday.
