Paris cancels New Year’s celebration at Champs-Elysees
The Paris City Hall announced on Saturday it has decided to cancel the festivities that take place at Champs-Elysee Avenue on New Year’s Eve due to the growing number of infections from COVID-19.
“The authorities of Paris, in accordance with the government’s statement, on the recommendation of the prefecture of police and sanitary authorities, are reporting that the festive events on the Champs Elysees will not take place,” the city hall stated.
The announcement comes after France reported a near-record in the number of cases of coronavirus registered daily. The government’s spokesperson Gabriel Attal said the country might tighten the restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the virus, while President Emmanuel Macron hinted at a possibility of introducing mandatory vaccination.
