Pompeo, Mnuchin deny rift over new China sanctions
United States State Secretary Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin denied on Friday they had been disagreeing over President Donald Trump’s new executive order that aims to prohibit American individuals and entities from investing in companies tied to the Chinese military.
Their comments come shortly after the Wall Street Journal reported the two had disagreed on the scoop of the latest sanctions. Pompeo allegedly supported a wider approach, while Mnuchin voiced blacklisting only the companies “specifically flagged” by the Pentagon but not affiliates or subsidiaries.
“We are simply working to resolve interagency mechanics of an important executive order,” Pompeo stated, while Mnuchin added, “We are coordinating closely on an interagency basis.”
