Pompeo pushes for Iran arms embargo extension
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to extend an arms embargo against Iran as the existing restriction expires later this year. In case of a no-deal scenario, the secretary aims to reimpose even harsher United Nations (UN) sanctions to Tehran, according to his statement for The New York Times.
“We cannot allow the Islamic Republic of Iran to purchase conventional weapons in six months. We are prepared to exercise all of our diplomatic options to ensure the arms embargo stays in place at the U.N. Security Council,” Pompeo asserted.
In May 2018, the Trump administration pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after United States President Donald Trump signed Presidential Memorandum ordering the reinstatement of tougher sanctions to Iran.
