Pope cancels appearances to avoid crowds gathering
Pope Francis canceled two regular appearances to avoid crowds gathering to see him amid the coronavirus outbreak, the Vatican announced on Saturday.
The pope will deliver the addresses scheduled for Sunday and Wednesday from the official papal library instead of appearing on the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square and the speeches will be streamed on television or online.
Italy has been the most affected European country with the number of coronavirus cases reaching 4,636 and the death toll hitting 197. The north of the country was worst hit, while in Rome, 49 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
