Raab defends UK Afghan evacuation strategy
United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab (pictured) defended on Friday the actions that the UK government undertook over the past week when it comes to evacuating civilians and staff from Afghanistan.
Raab commended his team for the strategy they put together, adding that the government has been working “tirelessly” to evacuate as many people as possible. Additionally, he said that 1,635 UK nationals and Afghan staff have been evacuated since the Taliban’s takeover of the country.
Raab has been criticized this week, with members from the opposition calling for his resignation, over his decision not to engage with the Afghan Foreign Minister over the past weekend when the Afghanistan government fell. He asserted that he was prioritizing the evacuation efforts and labeled his decision as “the right one.”
