Report: US rejects deal on Ukraine, security with Russia
NATO refuses to sign a bilateral agreement on security with Russia and to close the door to Ukraine’s future membership in the Atlantic Alliance, revealed El Pais on Wednesday as stated in two confidential documents sent a week ago by Washington and NATO to Moscow, to which the newspaper has had access.
According to the document, NATO will continue “to strongly support (…) the open-door policy,” not excluding the future incorporation of Ukraine or Georgia into the Alliance. Besides, future negotiations can only be achieved in a context of “de-escalation of Russia’s threatening actions toward Ukraine.”
For the moment, Russia has not responded to the confidential documents sent by Washington and NATO, as per information provided by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko. According to El Pais, the texts largely reflect the messages Western leaders have conveyed in public to the Kremlin. The United States and NATO coordinated their responses, which are complementary but have some differences.
