Rising unemployment indicators appearing in UK – BoE’s Haskel
Bank of England (BoE) Monetary Policy Committee’s External Member Jonathan Haskel said on Wednesday that the “indicators of rising unemployment are already” appearing, adding that the issue is “worrying.”
Furloughed workers in the United Kingdom and the uncertainty of the return to their jobs cause more reason for concern, he warned in a speech to Brighton Chamber of Commerce.
On the other hand, Haskel noted that economic activity is regaining some of the pre-coronavirus pandemic levels faster than the central bank expected. “I believe the current stance of monetary policy is appropriate but, on balance, risks are to the downside,” he concluded.
