Rival of Japan’s PM Suga urges stimulus measures
Japan’s former foreign minister Fumio Kishida urged the government on Thursday to deliver another “tens of trillions of yen” stimulus package to negate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Many countries are signaling that they will maintain expansionary fiscal and monetary policy steps for the time being. Japan must not fall behind,” commented Kishida, who is contesting Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga as chief of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
The party is expected to choose a new leader on September 29, while the government is still considering whether to hold the general election on October 17.
