Russia to develop new weapons, ensure balance of power
Russia has set the goal of developing new weapons systems in an attempt to maintain a strategic balance with the United States, Deputy Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Konstantin Vorontsov, said on Monday.
Speaking in a meeting on disarmament at the General Assembly of the United Nations, Vorontsov explained that the plan involved optimizing the existing capacities and eliminating obsolete technologies, in addition to developing new ones.
“The need to maintain a strategic balance can be undermined by destabilizing steps the United States is taking towards the development of an unrestricted global missile defense system, in addition to high-precision non-nuclear weapons,” Vorontsov said, citing proliferation as an essential topic for the future of US-Russia relations.
