Shell ordered to lower CO2 emissions after court ruling
Royal Dutch Shell was ordered by the Hague District Court on Wednesday to lower its CO2 emissions by net 45% in 2030 compared to the company’s 2019 levels in a big win for climate activists who sued the oil giant.
Seven activist groups including Greenpeace sued Shell, one of the world’s largest fossil fuel producers, in 2019 in an attempt to force the company to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases that are responsible for climate change and respiratory diseases.
Shell previously stated it aims to reduce the net carbon footprint of its products by 30% in 2035 or sooner.
