Ship owner aims to unblock Suez Canal on Saturday
Japanese company Shoei Kisen which owns the large container ship stranded in the Suez Canal said on Friday it plans to free the vessel and unblock the passageway by Saturday night Japan time.
“We are continuing works to remove sediment as of now, with additional dredging tools,” the company stated and stressed that the incident hasn’t caused any oil leakage or casualties.
Earlier, a salvage company involved in efforts to refloat the 220,000-tonne ship Ever Given warned the operation could take “days to weeks.” On Thursday, the Suez Canal Authority temporarily suspended all navigation through the key shipping passageway until the vessel is refloated. Meanwhile, analysts estimated $9.6 billion per day in ship traffic may be halted due to the blockage.
