South African president tests positive for COVID
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said in a statement. According to the announcement, Ramaphosa is being treated by the South African Military Health Service for mild symptoms of the illness and all of his responsibilities in the coming week have been delegated to Deputy President David Mabuza.
“President Ramaphosa says his own infection serves as a caution to all people in the country to be vaccinated and remain vigilant against exposure,” the statement read, adding, “Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalization.”
The news comes shortly after the new Omicron variant of the virus was first detected in South Africa.
