Spain to declare state of emergency over COVID-19
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Friday that the country aims to declare a “state of alert,” the first stage of a state of emergency, over the coronavirus outbreak that, lasting for 15 days. The decision is expected to be confirmed by The Council of Ministers on Saturday.
The death toll reached 120 while the number of people tested positive for COVID-19 grew to 4,209 as Spain confirmed 1,063 new coronavirus cases and 53 new deaths overnight.
“We are only in the first phase of the fight against the virus. Very hard weeks await us. It cannot be ruled out that we will reach 10,000 affected next week,” Sanchez said in his address to the nation on coronavirus from his residence La Moncloa.
