Suga says new PM could call snap election
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga reminded Asahi media outlet in an interview that the next head of state has the right to dissolve the parliament and call a snap election, alluding he may choose to do so himself.
Suga is likely to replace the country’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader being that the party reportedly favors the candidate and has a parliamentary majority. “The prime minister has the right to dissolve parliament,” Suga said. “If the next premier decides to call one [a snap election], that should be the case. If not, it won’t happen,” he added.
Under Article 7 of the Japanese Constitution, the nation’s leader has the power to dissolve the Lower House unilaterally, generating the requirement to hold a general election within 40 days, which may solidify the political grip of Abe’s successor.
