Sunak to end furlough scheme despite extended lockdown – report
United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is set to end bolster taxpayer support for laid-off employees after rejecting businessess’ plead to continue the financial aid, Sky News reported on Monday citing a Treasury source.
The gradual withdrawal of the furlough scheme is scheduled to begin July 1, despite the extended lockdown and delayed “Freedom Day” from the COVID-19 pandemic, which was originally set to June 21, but postponed due to the rise of virus variant cases.
The federal aid fund covered 80% of salaries for those workers, who were laid off due to the pandemic, but starting July 1 the government will pay 70%, while employers will be forced to come up with the remaining 10%. Retail, hospitality and leisure sector relief will be reduced from 100% to 66%.
