Tesco to add 20K jobs to cope with surging demand
Tesco plc announced on Friday it will hire 20,000 people to work in their stores for at least next 12 weeks, as the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in an unprecedented increase in demand for food and household products. “We have seen 140,000 views on our Tesco Careers page and over the coming days thousands of new colleagues will join us in helping to feed the nation,” Tesco’s Chief People Officer, Natasha Adams said.
Other major supermarkets in the United Kingdom such as Aldi, Asda and Lidl also said they will add 16,500 extra jobs to keep the stores open. As pandemic spread in the UK, the retailers witnessed a surge in panic buying, forcing them to reduce working hours and ration goods that can be bought.
