The Netherlands imposes new virus lockdown
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced on Saturday that his country will enter a new lockdown to avoid the further spread of COVID-19, particularly its newest strain, Omicron.
The restrictions will come to force on December 19 and last until at least January 14. They will restrict visits to other people’s homes to only once a day and with no more than two people aged 13 or more. That number will be raised to four on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve. The government also ordered the closing of all educational institutions and the majority of public indoor spaces of non-essential purpose.
“The Netherlands is again shutting down. That is unavoidable because of the fifth wave that is coming at us with the Omicron variant,” Rutte stated at a press conference.
