TikTok proposes joint fight against harmful content
ByteDance’s TikTok announced on Tuesday it had sent a letter to nine social media companies proposing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the launch of a global campaign to combat posting and sharing harmful content on their platforms.
“By working together and creating a hash bank for violent and graphic content, we could significantly reduce the chances of people encountering it and enduring the emotional harm that viewing such content can bring – no matter the app they use,” TikTok’s statement read. “Technology can help auto-detect and limit much but not all of that, and human moderators and collaborative teams are often on the frontlines of these issues.”
The popular video platform currently has over 600 million daily users in China and 100 million in Europe. Earlier this month, the United States announced it would block downloading TikTok and WeChat’s application in the country over national security risks but that decision was later overruled.
