Truss: This could be beginning of end for Putin
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Sunday that the attack on Ukraine could be “the beginning of the end” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially if he resorts to using “even worse weapons.” She warned the conflict could continue for “a number of years” and be “very, very bloody.”
Speaking for Sky News, Truss conceded the impact of sanctions against Russia will not be felt immediately as the West needs time to “wean Europe off Russian oil.” In the meantime, she stressed that “it’s our role as key supporters of Ukraine to continue to supply them with defensive weapons, continue to supply them with economic support to help them resist this egregious invasion.” On diplomatic talks, the foreign secretary said Russians must remove their troops from Ukraine before any negotiations. “They cannot negotiate with a gun to the head of the Ukrainians, they need to remove their troops, they need to deescalate this conflict. I see absolutely no signs of that.”
