Uber to compensate its drivers infected with COVID-19
Uber Technologies Inc said it plans to compensate its drivers and delivery people that have been infected with the coronavirus or placed in quarantine for up to 14 days. The company has already started to do so in some countries but said that the same benefits will be available for drivers and delivery people worldwide.
The company reiterated its drivers are classified as contractors. By classifying contractors as employees, Uber would become subject to labor laws that require higher pay and other benefits, such as medical insurance.
Earlier this week, France’s top court ruled that the Uber driver can be considered as an employee. This ruling represents a change to the US company’s business model and potentially obliges it to pay more taxes and benefits such as paid holidays.
