UK industrial production plunges 20.3% in April
Industrial output in the United Kingdom plunged by a record 20.3% in April compared to the previous month as the country found itself in the coronavirus lockdown, the Office for National Statistics said in a release on Friday.
The largest downward contribution was provided by manufacturing, which dropped 24.3% led by transport equipment. Out of the 13 subsectors, 12 showed downward contributions, according to the report. Total production output fell 9.5% for the three months to April 2020 compared with the previous quarter. Output was down 11.9% on the year.
“The coronavirus (COVID-19) had a significant negative impact on our estimates of monthly, three-monthly and three-monthly on a year ago growth for production output during April 2020, resulting in record falls across all three estimates,” the ONS said.
