UK threatens to trigger Article 16 of NI Protocol
United Kingdom’s chief Brexit negotiator David Frost warned on Monday that his government will resort to triggering Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol if it does not reach an agreement with the European Union on outstanding Brexit-related issues. The article would allow the UK to override the protocol and is considered a backup safeguard mechanism.
The EU and the UK are involved in disputes centered on the flow of goods through Northern Ireland. Frost said the UK is still waiting for an answer to its proposals submitted in July. “But from what I hear I worry that we will not get one which enables the significant change we need. So I urge the EU to be ambitious. It’s no use tinkering around the edges. We need significant change.” Meanwhile, the union has been adamant that it will not renegotiate the protocol both sides have already agreed to.
