UK to call for UN probe into Xinjiang human rights violations
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is set to insist on “urgent and unfettered” access to China’s Xinjiang region to be granted to the United Nations, Raab’s office said in a statement on Sunday.
Raab is expected to tell the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday that UN experts should investigate human rights violations in the region that “are taking place on an industrial scale.”
“The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, or another independent fact-finding expert, must – and I repeat must – be given urgent and unfettered access to Xinjiang. The reported abuses — which include torture, forced labor and forced sterilization of women — are extreme and they are extensive. The situation in Xinjiang is beyond the pale,” the British top diplomat will say.
