UK top diplomat Truss to take over Brexit talks
United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Liza Truss will take over talks with the European Union after chief Brexit negotiator David Frost stepped down, the British government announced on Sunday. Truss previously served as international trade secretary from 2019 to 2021, overseeing the signing of the trade deal with Japan, the UK’s first free trade agreement since leaving the EU.
“Liz Truss will take over Ministerial responsibility for the UK’s relationship with the European Union with immediate effect. She will become the UK’s co-chair of the Partnership Council and the Joint Committee, and will lead the ongoing negotiations to resolve the problems arising from the current operation of the Northern Ireland Protocol,” the government said. Her EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic took note of the change, stating his team will “continue to cooperate with the UK in the same constructive spirit on all important tasks ahead, including the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.”
