UK urges Japan to speed up green energy transition
The United Kingdom’s ambassador to Tokyo, Julia Longbottom, urged Japan to speed up its transition away from coal power and end the sale of new petrol and hybrid cars by 2030, citing transparency as the first priority in developed countries reaching set targets.
“We hope that Japan will not only end the domestic use of coal but also find a way to pull out of or find alternatives to remaining coal projects it is financing in Indonesia and Bangladesh,” Longbottom told Nikkei newspaper, explaining the UK’s conviction that these countries also want to shift towards more environmentally friendly forms of energy.
Leading up to the COP26 climate summit to be held next month in Scotland, Longbottom expressed hope that Japan making commitments towards quitting coal financing abroad could encourage other countries, including China, to do the same thing.
