Ukraine: Russia wants control of Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant
The Ukrainian government informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Russia is “planning to take full and permanent control of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.” The IAEA said Moscow denied that allegation.
Ukraine also told IAEA that there are around 400 Russian soldiers at the site and that Russian experts arrived at the plant a few days ago “to assess the radiation situation there.” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated the current situation “clearly contravenes” the agency’s main principles, including that “the operating staff must be able to fulfill their safety and security duties and have the capacity to make decisions free of undue pressure.”
